“Fly Me to the Moon” is the parade theme for the Island’s 2024 Independence Day Celebration. The parade is held in Deer Isle village and David Taylor will be the Grand Marshall. The day begins with the Stonington Six run/walk in support of the Island Community Center. Check-in is at 6:30 a.m. The Oasis Cafe, hosted by the Deer Isle Sunset Congregational Church, is at 9 a.m. in Deer Isle. The community band, led by Tom Gotwals, will perform in the village. The Honor Guard will gather at 9:45 a.m. and the parade will start at 10 a.m. Events on the Stonington fish pier begin at 5 p.m. There will be food, entertainment, vendors and music, with Along for the Ride performing. “Island’s Got Talent,” for those who can sing, dance or play an instrument, will start at 6:30 p.m. Sign up on the pier with Suzy Shepard. Fireworks over Stonington harbor begin at 9:15 p.m. To register a float or antique car for the parade, or to be a vendor on the pier, call Shepard at 367-5855 or 460-9461.
