17th Annual Deer Isle Jazz Festival – Artifacts Trio
Flute, cello and drum trios are rare in jazz, and one with the full sound and rhythmic precision of this technically assured equal-partners collective is rarer still.
Flutist Nicole Mitchell, cellist Tomeka Reid and drummer Mike Reed draw upon direct involvement with Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, a half-century-old organization that remains among jazz’s most influential. Though grounded in history, their original compositions are uniquely contemporary. Their arrangements of pieces like Steve McCall’s “I’ll Be Right Here Waiting,” are, as the New York Times said, “intrepid, soulful and hauntingly beautiful.”
Enjoy an exciting evening as the Artifacts trio brings its unique personality to their own music, and to works by composers including Pulitzer-Prize winner Henry Threadgill.
Curated by award-winning music critic and journalist Larry Blumenfeld.
