The Deer Isle Artists Association presents the third ART matters 4 session with featured artists Galen Davis, Stephan Haley and Lawrence Moffett at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, at the Deer Isle Artists Association Gallery, 15 Main St.

The three artists will discuss how their unique work has typically represented the natural landscape at the February ART matters 4 session, titled “ALTERNATE APPROACHES.”

The program begins at 1:30 pm. Artists will bring examples of their work and discuss it with each other, then the audience will join in. DIAA Board Member Hub White will serve as moderator. A reception follows with 44 North Coffee, tea and homemade cake.

Each artist offered a statement that previews their comments during the discussion:

Galen Davis paints local coastal landscapes — islands, peninsulas, large rock formations, blueberry fields, bridges, boats — focusing on design and composition, patterns of light and shadows and color harmonies. “Working in pastel and oil, I generally make rough sketches and varying composition on site, translating onto larger surfaces in my studio, using photos and sketches for reference,” she said.

Stephan Haley creates woodcut-like works on paper with water-based relief printing ink, both as monoprint and editioned prints.  “A lot of my art has been informed by the traditional Japanese print, American realist painting and the Maine landscape,” Haley said.

Larry Moffett works with oils, watercolors, pastels, woodcuts, cut paper and silver. “I moved to Deer Isle 46 years ago to paint the landscape, and I would like to share my process,” he said.

Founded in 1972, the Deer Isle Artists Association is a member-run nonprofit organization committed to creating and exhibiting art. Our more than 100 members include painters, sculptors, printmakers, jewelers, fiber artists, photographers, ceramicists and other artists.
