Alewife and other river herring were once abundant, but due to overfishing and damming of streams and rivers populations, they have declined to dangerously low numbers in recent years. Through the local knowledge and capacity in our communities, we are now seeing restoration and stewardship efforts making a positive impact on alewife numbers across the state of Maine.
