Exhibition features unknown regional island stitchers from the 1930s to 1970s.
The public is invited to the Art By Katy Gallery, 22 Weed Field Road, in Stonington to view “A Stitch in Time Exhibition”. This exhibit showcases a unique folk art collection of vintage embroidered samplers crafted by unknown stitchery artists circa 1930s-1970s.
A needlework sampler is a piece of embroidery or cross-stitching produced as a ‘specimen of achievement’, demonstration or a test of skill in needlework. It often includes the alphabet, figures, motifs, decorative borders and sometimes the name of the person who embroidered it and the date.
The exhibit’s charming samplers in their original vintage frames are believed to be the work of Maine island women from Deer Isle and the region. The collection was assembled by the late Scott Morgan, an avid textile collector and artist.
The exhibition will run from July 1 through July 15th. Art By Katy Gallery is open Noon-4PM during events or when you see the Open Flag out or by Chance or Appointment. 367-6369.
