Summer

Summer on Deer Isle and Stonington is everything people imagine when they dream of “Vacationland.” 

July brings some of the Island’s most cherished traditions. The 4th of July Parade in Deer Isle Village is full of small-town charm, followed by spectacular fireworks over Stonington Harbor, while the following weekend, the Stonington Lobster Boat Races bring excitement to the harbor as working lobster boats from across the state spend the day racing in a uniquely Maine celebration.

The Island’s creative spirit shines brightest in summer. The internationally renowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts welcomes artists and makers from around the world for workshops and classes. Opera House Arts hosts theater, concerts, and family-friendly programs in one of Maine’s most historic performing arts venues. And across Deer Isle and Stonington, local galleries and studios, as well as retail shops, open their doors, including Nervous Nellie’s, an eclectic campus of structures and sculptures made of discarded metal, local lumber, and dump-foraged material. 

No summer visit would be complete without enjoying the waters of coastal Maine. From Stonington Harbor, visitors can travel to a remote section of Acadia National Park with Isle au Haut Boat Services or book recreational tours aboard kayaks or lobster boats.

After a morning of outdoor adventuring, visitors may choose to head indoors to one of the Island’s museums. Explore the fishing industry up close at Discovery Wharf, the history of the granite industry at the Deer Isle Granite Museum, or the Island’s rich culture at the Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society.

Fall

Ask almost any Mainer their favorite month of the year, and chances are they’ll say September. Fall arrives on Deer Isle with crisp ocean air, golden sunlight, and a quieter rhythm that many treasure. Warm sunny days give way to cool evenings, gardens reach their peak harvest, and the Island landscape transforms into a stunning tapestry of autumn color.

Fall is also an ideal time to explore the Island’s scenic trails without the bustle of peak summer. Deer Isle is home to more than a dozen public natural areas and preserves. Winding trails lead through forests, across granite ledges, and along shorelines with sweeping ocean views — all open free of charge for visitors to enjoy. The fall is also a great time to take a day trip to nearby Acadia National Park, just over an hour drive from Deer Isle. 

For lighthouse enthusiasts, September brings Maine Open Lighthouse Day. Visitors can enjoy boat trips, sailing excursions, and self-guided tours of the lighthouses near the Island. Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend marks the annual Peninsula Potters Tour, when talented local potters open their studios to visitors for demonstrations, exhibits, and shopping. And Small Business Saturday kicks off the holiday season with a locals’ favorite craft fair at the Island Community Center.

For visitors seeking breathtaking scenery, authentic coastal charm, and the simple pleasures of a Maine autumn, Deer Isle and Stonington offer an unforgettable fall escape.

Winter

Visitors often ask, “What do people do during the winter on Deer Isle?” The answer surprises many — island life remains active and deeply connected throughout the colder months. 

The holiday season is magical on the Island. Holiday traditions are celebrated with warmth, creativity, and unmistakable Maine character. Homes and shops glow with lights, and a towering Christmas tree built from lobster traps is a symbol of coastal spirit. Community gathers for wreath-making workshops, artisan craft fairs like Aragosta‘s Winter Wonderland Market, cribbage tournaments at Stonecutters Kitchen, and warm cups of 44 North Coffee.

January brings one of the Island’s favorite traditions: Winterfest, hosted by the Healthy Island Project. This beloved community celebration features bonfires, fireworks, games, and family-friendly events that brighten the long winter days. Community gatherings remain at the heart of island life. The cultural calendar stays alive with free trivia and open mic nights at the Stonington Opera House.  

And then there is the landscape itself. Winter transforms Deer Isle and Stonington into a world of extraordinary beauty. Fresh snow blankets spruce trees, granite ledges, harbors, and lobster boats in brilliant white. Favorite winter activities include cross-country skiing, ice skating, and snowshoeing.

Spring

Spring arrives with a sense of renewal and excitement. After the long Maine winter, the Island awakens in waves of color as flowering trees, lupines, and wildflowers begin to bloom. Longer days and warming temperatures make spring one of the most beautiful and peaceful times to explore the Island.

Lobstermen begin setting traps, oyster farmers raise their cages, and fishermen land fresh halibut. The harbor comes alive with the sounds of working boats, seabirds, and the rhythms of island life returning in full force – offering visitors a glimpse into the maritime traditions that shape this community. 

Spring is a spectacular season for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts. Wings, Waves & Woods, an island-wide birding and nature festival hosted by Island Heritage Trust, is celebrated in May. The festival draws bird lovers from around the country for guided walks, educational programs, boat tours, and other opportunities to experience the Island’s remarkable biodiversity during peak migration season. 

Restaurants open their doors for the season, with spring offering a better chance at securing reservations at the most coveted, award-winning local restaurants, including Aragosta (#1 US Hotel for Food and Drink, Food & Wine) and The Ark (Top 50 Restaurants in America, The New York Times).

With the warmer weather, two Island markets return for the season. On Thursdays, the Artisans Market is held in Deer Isle, next door to Town Hall, while the Stonington Farmers Market gathers in the Island Community Center parking lot on Fridays.
